About

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a form of gentle and safe energy healing which can help you become more balanced - physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

What is energy healing and where does it come from?

Reiki was developed in Japan by Mikao Usui in the early 1900s, the name coming from the Japanese words rei, meaning “universal,” and ki, which refers to the vital life force energy that flows through all living things. Indeed, Chi, ki and prana are all words you might have heard to describe energy and in Asian cultures the concept of energy flow in exercises, such as Thai Chi or yoga, or in treatments, such as acupuncture, is an everyday part of life.

Western cultures lack the vocabulary to describe energy. We aren’t taught to pay attention to our own energy. We rarely connect to ‘universal energy’. This can leave many of us drained, stressed and ill. Once people have had their first Reiki treatment they are usually surprised to discover that they have been able to feel this ‘universal energy’ working in their bodies.

What does Reiki treat?

In short, everything! Because reiki works on the entire self – mind, body and emotions – and because it is universal life force energy, reiki may aid all types of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual healing.

Conditions that people have used Reiki to help treat include:  cancer,  heart disease,  anxiety, depression, chronic pain, infertility, neurodegenerative disorders, Crohn’s disease & fatigue.

It is important to note that Reiki should never take the place of medical treatment but should instead be used alongside regular treatment as an effective complementary therapy. It is also the case that Reiki will go where it is meant to go. You may come in hoping to 'fix' a sore knee but leave having helped a digestive issue! The practitioner's role is to facilitate reiki, they cannot direct it. The Reiki knows where it will serve your highest good. In fact, every treatment begins with the setting of that intention.

What happens during a treatment?

A treatment booking is usually 1 hour. At the start of the session you will have time to discuss your health, remove your shoes and to settle onto the treatment table. The Reiki treatment itself typically last about 50 minutes. At the end you will have time to ‘bring yourself’ around and discuss any feelings or observations.

During a session, you’ll lie on a treatment table fully clothed, with a blanket covering your body. Your reiki practitioner will gently place their hands, palms down, on or just above your body. They will usually begin at the crown of your head and move down the body to your feet. There will usually be relaxing music in the background and the treatment is carried out quietly without chatting. Though of course you should tell your practitioner if you are uncomfortable at any point, if you are too hot or cold or need to change position...and if you need to cough or sneeze!

The length of time that the practitioner leaves their hands in each position is determined by the flow of energy through their hands at each location.

What will I feel during a treatment?

The response to a Reiki treatment will vary from person to person and from treatment to treatment. What you feel one week, might be quite different the next week. Most people will feel warmth, or heat, or tingling from the Practitioner’s hands. Some might feel the energy as a cold sensation. Other sensations may include seeing coloured lights or sensing pulsating waves. Others may feel very little during a treatment, this doesn’t mean that reiki isn’t working. It is always working.

For almost everyone it is a deeply relaxing experience; in fact, many people fall asleep!

What happens after a treatment?

To get the most out of your treatment you should drink plenty of water, rest and avoid alcohol or caffeine for the rest of the day.

The post-reiki feeling varies from person to person and from treatment to treatment. You may feel deeply relaxed and pleasantly spaced-out for the rest of the day, or even a few days. You may feel a sense of clarity and be full of energy and renewed vigour. On occasion, you may have some physical symptoms in the days that follow, such as a mild headache, a breakout of spots or a cold sore reappearing. These are signs your body is healing and releasing.

How many treatments will I need?

You will certainly feel the benefit of just one treatment and it can be a lovely treat to yourself or even a thoughtful gift for someone. However, reiki tends to work cumulatively, and 4-6 treatments is typically recommended. Many people who have reiki treatments regularly know when they are needing a ‘top up’.
